Asia University Conducts Energy Saving and Carbon Reduction with Outstanding Achievements---
Asia University, winning an Outstanding Achievement Award of Energy Saving and Carbon Reduction granted by Bureau of Energy, Ministry of Economic Affairs, holds an energy conservation symposium.
Asia University(AU) conducts energy saving and carbon reduction with prominent achievements in recent years, saving expenses of water, gas, and electricity for about NTD 4,000,000 every year. AU was so ranked as the No-1 winner of the Outstanding Achievement Award of Energy Saving and Carbon Reduction granted by the Bureau of Energy of the Ministry of Economic Affairs in Taiwan. AU cooperates with the Bureau of Energy and the Industrial Technology Research Institute to hold an energy conservation symposium on Aug, 21 in the AU campus. There were more than 200 participants from government institutions, schools and companies. In addition to joining the symposium sessions, they visited the school to see the energy-saving facilities of the lighting in the library, the heat pump of the dormitories, the green-energy machines in some equipment rooms, the “fresh-air breathing” capabilities of the buildings, an “honest shop” for multiple uses, etc., in the school campus. Most of the participants said that they benefited a lot from this visit to the school.
“Let’s conserve energy and reduce carbon footprint!” said AU President Jing-Pha Tsai. He mentioned that AU joined the action plan of Talloires Declaration of Green Universities in 2011, and that in the past four years AU was ranked in the top list in the GreenMetric World University report every year and was one of the leading green-metric universities in Taiwan. “For example, in 2013 AU was ranked No. 41 best green-metric university in the world, No.2 best in Taiwan, according to the GreenMetric World University report,” added President Tsai. “And AU has been granted a certification of ISO50001 Energy Management Systems by the Taiwan Accreditation Foundation, in addition to being ranked as the above-mentioned top-1 winner of the Outstanding Achievement Awards granted by the Bureau of Energy, Ministry of Economic Affairs.”
The dean of General Affairs and the director of the Office of Environment Safety at AU, Prof. Jie-Yang Jhu, mentioned that AU has been trying hard to conduct energy management, such as establishing a green-energy consuming cloud-information equipment room, constructing a curriculum-depending electricity supply system, improving heat pumping and the unloading of ice-water main machine of the central air-conditioning system, changing T8 daylight fluorescent lamp tubes into T5 and LED ones in campus, implementing environment-sensing library lighting and network-controlling energy-saving school air-conditioning, setting up a solar-energy photo-electric house, and creating an air-conditioning electricity-saving control system, with budget expenses up to NTD 49,770,000. The total achievement in 3 years includes a 10.44% energy saving of 1,359-kiloliter oil equivalent, a 2.4% decrease of electricity use for 335 megawatts, and a reduction of carbon emission of 3,477 tons, resulting in a prominent saving of 12 million NT dollars in oil-equivalent and electricity expenses in three years.
The director of the Energy Saving Management And Extension Section of the Bureau of Energy at the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Mr. Wen-Xin Lin, mentioned, when speaking of the effect of the energy saving effort made by AU, that it worth to come to AU to see the measures adopted by AU for cutting energy consumptions and reducing carbon footprints. He hoped the participants could start to take actions to conduct energy saving and carbon reduction measures after this visit to AU. Afterwards, the chief of the Energy Conservation Section at AU, Mr. Lin-Xiang Tsai, the dean of General Affairs at Feng Chia University, Mr. Ming-Ren Zheng, and a technician of the Office of General Affairs at National Taipei University of Technology, Mr. Fong-Sheng Lian, gave speeches to share related knowledge and experiences in the symposium sessions.
An assistant general manager of the ZLABS Inc., Ms. Hui-Lan Jiang, mentioned that this is really a meaningful event which helps firms and schools learn energy-saving technologies. “By serious implementations of what is learned from this symposium, even if the fourth nuclear power plant in Taiwan is not put into operation in the future, no electricity-shortage crisis will happen,” said Ms. Jiang. A section chief of National Chin-Yi University of Technology, Mr. Jian-Liang Lin, mentioned similarly that this energy conservation symposium provides opportunity for universities to share good ideas in energy saving and carbon reduction, resulting in a positive effect of experience shifting among institutions and companies over Taiwan.
